Ben Affleck is an American actor, film director and screenwriter.
Although he began his career as a child actor, and had minor
rules in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992)
movie, and Field of Dreams (1989),
he first really became famous when he co-wrote, and featured in
Good Will Hunting (1997),
with his best friend, Matt Damon -
a movie for which they shared the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
Affleck subsequently featured in a number of movies including
Shakespeare in Love (1998),
Armageddon (1998),
Phantoms (1998),
Dogma (1999),
Forces of Nature (1999),
Boiler Room (2000),
Pearl Harbor (2001),

Ben Affleck has had high profile romances with Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez . He dated Jennifer Lopez from
2002 to

and the couple were in fact engaged for a while. He subsequently dated
Jennifer Garner , whom he had first met when they co-starred in
Daredevil. Affleck and Jennifer Garner married
in 2005,
and now have a daughter, Violet Anne Affleck.
Ben Affleck is also known for being a keen poker player, and has been tutored by
poker professionals Amir Vahedi and Annie Duke .
In 2004,
he won the California State Poker Championship, and as a result qualified for the
2004 World Poker
Tour final tournament.
Ben Affleck is also known for his support of the non-profit A-T Childrens Project,
an organization that supports children with the rare immunodeficiency disorder,
Ataxia-telangiectasia (also known as "Boder-Sedgwick syndrome" or "Louis-Bar syndrome").
Affleck is also known for his political activism, and supported
Al Gore in his 2000
Presidential campaign,
Hilary Clinton in her senate campaign the same year, and the
John Kerry Presidential campaign in 2004.
He has also appeared in a print ad (with his gay cousin Jason) in support of
Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, and has also suggested, more than once,
that he might like to run for Congress one day.

Ben Affleck is well-cast as Drew Latham, a millionaire on the verge of nervous collapse, a man with no sense of self who tries to buy the trappings of life--including the family that just happens to be living in his childhood home. He jumps around with a plastic smile on his face, trying to impose himself on the bribed household, who--even though the parents are on the verge of divorce--are still more psychologically coherent than he is. Surviving Christmas has been unfairly trashed due to anti-Affleck sentiment in the post-Gigli era; though the movie eventually succumbs to bland formula, it has some moments of bracing dark comedy and genuine empathy, mostly thanks to James Gandolfini (The Sopranos, The Mexican) and Catherine O'Hara (A Mighty Wind, Beetlejuice) as the parents--two superb actors who could breathe life into any banal script. Plane crashes, pickpockets, hurricanes--heaven and hell is moving to prevent our able hero Ben (Ben Affleck) from marrying his sweetie (Maura Tierney) in Savannah. At every turn he runs into someone else despairing about the woes of married life. And of course, temptation proves overwhelming in the face of traveling companion Sarah (Sandra Bullock), the wild woman whom he can't seem--or doesn't want--to lose. After a wayward bird flies into the engine of his airplane, Ben is forced to find another way to his wedding. He finds himself stuck with Sarah, whom he carried from the plane after she was whacked in the noggin by his laptop. The heat between them is unmistakable, and the drama in the film comes from the "will he or won't he," both in terms of sleeping with Sarah and meeting up with his bride. Forces of Nature is a fun and sentimental road-trip film, but Ben is such a strait-laced noodge, you can't help but want him to fall flat on his face just a little. Bullock is the life of this film, although her free-spirited ways get a bit tired (responsibility is not all bad). The highlight of this movie, though, is definitely the cinematography. The beautiful rain shots and the colors of the scenes lend to the unsettling mood. While the jokes are not rip-roaring, Forces is to be reckoned with for those times when a lighthearted film is what you need. --Jenny Brown |
