The main subject of mockery is 300, the visual-effects laden Greek warrior movie, the relentless homoeroticism of which is not-so-subtly pointed out with a mixture of scatology, phallic humor, painted-on six-pack abs, disco songs, blows to the groin, and spitting--lots and lots and lots of spitting. There's nothing remotely clever about Meet the Spartans, and even fans of pop-culture cuisinarts like Scary Movie may feel the genre is losing its oomph, but if you're looking for a shotgun blast of lowbrow gags, this is it. Along for the ride are Sean Maguire (The Class), Kevin Sorbo (Hercules), Ken Davitian (Borat), Diedrich Bader (Napoleon Dynamite), and Carmen Electra, without whom no movie of this kind would be complete. The only person who emerges with any credibility is comedienne Nicole Parker (Mad TV), who does a pretty spot-on impression of Ellen DeGeneres. --Bret Fetzer

By dint of the inexplicable popularity of their send-up of movie genres in the parody movies Scary Movie and Date Movie, writer/director duo Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer probably got an epic-sized bucket of cash for this hastily stitched pastiche of drive-by entertainment. There's no particular variety of movie they were sent to send up this time, unless big box-office grossers has now become a genre in and of itself. If so, Epic Movie may well qualify as part of that league itself. Very little expense has been spared to make so-called "comic" references to a slew of mostly recent blockbusters--The Chronicles of Narnia, Borat, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the X-Men and Harry Potter series, Superman Returns, Nacho Libre, and The Da Vinci Code to name a few--and it's assumed we've seen them all. In a goofy thread of a story about four orphans plucked from some of the above, battle must be done through various bastardized plots from same so that a prophecy can be fulfilled and they can assume their rightful place as rulers of a sacred land. Lots of crotch kicks, fart, urine, and vomit jokes speed by as we pass through Willie Wonka's factory and a magical wardrobe with an unusually interesting assortment of look-alikes and name actors caught up in the gag mix (some of it legitimately funny). Darrell Hammond, Crispin Glover, David Carradine, Kevin McDonald, Carmen Electra, Kal Penn put on game (and sometimes gamy) faces, and it's definitely a hoot to watch comedy improv alums Fred Willard and Jennifer Coolidge as Aslo the Lion and the White Bitch do battle in a Narnian good vs. evil character smackdown. As lame as you already expect a movie like this to be, anything that can throw together an homage to C.S. Lewis alongside MTV's Punk'd in less than 90 minutes can't be all bad. --Ted Fry Epic Movie Extras Watch the writers and producer talk about how adding song and dance made Epic Movie a smash. |

Click Here | Amazon.com: The best performance in Cheaper by the Dozen 2 is by an actress you've probably never heard of: 11-year-old Alyson Stoner, who plays Sarah, one of twelve children of Tom and Kate Baker (Steve Martin, Bowfinger, and Bonnie Hunt, Return to Me). The movie follows the popular clan of the previous remake of Cheaper by the Dozen as they go to a camp in the mountains, where Tom renews his rivalry with Jimmy Murtaugh (Eugene Levy, Bringing Down the House). To the movie's credit, it doesn't quite degenerate into a National Lampoon's Vacation knock-off, though it comes perilously close. But thanks to the grace of Bonnie Hunt and general good spirits of the cast of kids (including Tom Welling, Smallville; Hilary Duff, The Perfect Man, who in some scenes becomes uncomfortably Lolita-esque; and Piper Perabo, Coyote Ugly, among others), this unnecessary sequel manages to remain enjoyable to anyone with a taste for broad family movies. But Stoner--as a tomboy getting her first crush--brings considerable charisma to her generically-written part, and her scenes give the movie a much-needed emotional lift. Otherwise, it's a movie in which Carmen Electra plays the voice of reason (in a series of tight-fitting tops). --Bret Fetzer |

Click Here | Amazon.com: Some comedy is like a scalpel; the Scary Movie series is a hand grenade, spewing bodily fluids and big-breasted women in all directions as they lampoon the latest horror. In Scary Movie 4's case, the main targets are War of the Worlds, The Village, The Grudge, Saw, and Tom Cruise jumping all over Oprah's couch (the scariest of the lot). Along the way, potshots get taken at non-horror fare like Brokeback Mountain and Million Dollar Baby, as well as obvious targets like Michael Jackson and George W. Bush, among others. Anna Faris (Lost in Translation) and Regina Hall (The Honeymooners) return as the central characters wandering through a crazy quilt of horror scenarios, joined by Craig Bierko (Cinderella Man) doing a dead-on parody of Cruise at his most manic. Cameos include everyone from Charlie Sheen to Shaquille O'Neal to Carmen Electra. Some of it's funny, some of it's not, but there's a generally buoyant zaniness that comes from director David Zucker, one of the creators of Airplane!, which started the whole firehose-of-jokes aesthetic. --Bret Fetzer |
