When three generations of women collide, it isn't always pretty. In Georgia Rule, Lindsay Lohan (Mean Girls) stars as Rachel, a wild child whose mother Lilly (Felicity Huffman, Desperate Housewives) ships her off to Idaho to be tamed by Georgia (Jane Fonda, On Golden Pond)--Lilly's own cantankerous mom. There, 17-year-old Rachel shocks the conservative community with her short shorts, eager sexuality (which she plies on everyone from 12-year-old boys to unsophisticated, but hot, Mormon neighbors), and her tales of possible sexual abuse at the hands of her somewhat slimy stepfather (Cary Elwes, The Princess Bride). As directed by Garry Marshall (Beaches, Pretty Woman), Georgia Rule is a flawed chick flick where the women are tolerable but not particularly likeable. The characters we want to know more about are the peripheral ones we don't see enough of--the men. Simon (Dermot Mulroney), the kindly (and sexy) veterinarian who was once madly in love with Lilly, in many ways is the film's moral compass. A widower whose wife and son died tragically in an accident, Simon would've made a more compelling movie subject than these women. And for all his latent pining for Lilly, the moviegoer feels relieved for him that dodged a bullet by not marrying into this dysfunctional family. While the female leads aren't quite believable as mother, daughter, and grandmother, they all have strong moments in the film that save it from being a groaning mess. While Lohan doesn't exhibit the charm she displayed in Mean Girls, she more than holds her own in parts with the scene-stealing Fonda, who is quite good at chewing up the scenery. --Jae-Ha Kim |

Lindsay Lohan leaps into her much anticipated debut CD with a blast of something that simulates warmed-over Led Zeppelin (the lyrically ferocious "First") and from there finesses it into a stylish experiment in pounding away at teen pop's predictability. Influences--not all of whom her 8-to-14-year-old fans will flip to, or even find, in their pinup mags--loom large: While the Ashlee Simpson-like rocker "Nobody 'Til You" winds into the Jessica Simpson-y "Symptoms of You," the lovelorn "Something I Never Had," taps a sweetly unself-conscious vocal vein that owes gratitude to the otherwise highly un-Lohan-like Lisa Loeb. Though Lohan might balk at the comparison--she is, after all, the "Ultimate"-spawning original teenage drama queen--fellow tween queen Hilary Duff's stamp is pressed firmly into stormy self-explorers like "Disconnected" and "Anything But Me." Where "Speak" intones loudest, though, is in its least-rocking, most beat-propelled songs: The title track dips and bounces tantalizingly, begging hands-in-the-air listeners to "c'mon and let it out"; "To Know Your Name" digitizes a sexy hip-hop inflected dance number; and "Rumors," a J. On her second full-length album, Lindsay Lohan tries to leave her Disney image behind for good. And what better way to do it than by starting off with the stark "Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father)," in which the singer wrestles with her stormy relationship with her felonious father? Lohan Sr. also is the object of the tortured "My Innocence" (as in, Dad, you took it away.) But the best tracks here are the ones on which Lohan Jr. spares us the angsty therapy and delivers tuneful pop-rock. Sure, the kind of rousing mega-chorus used on "Black Hole" has already been heard--to greater effect--in Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone," but it's still nifty. Elsewhere, "A Little More Personal" begins with Lohan talking about how talking at the start of a song is "rad," but then it turns into a very Cars-like tune--and it's hard to think of a catchier band than the Cars. No wonder it all sounds so impressively slick: For this transitional album, Lohan has surrounded herself with a team of pros--Kara DioGuardi (who's also written for Lohan rivals Ashlee Simpson and Hilary Duff, and coauthored 9 of the 12 songs here), power-popster Butch Walker, and former Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody. The first two also put their producing stamp on a cover of Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me" that's even more upbeat than the original, while Moody applied his tech skills on the other cover, Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen." Moody particularly shines on "Fastlane," however, a super-catchy number that's one of four for which Lohan gets a songwriting credit. Has she grown up?
